Volume, Density and Viscosity Laboratory

About Us

Traceability is transferred to measurements in single-channel piston pipettes and burettes, glass volume containers and metal volume containers by gravimetric measurement method using primary level standards created by the Volume Laboratory.

The traceability of hydrometers is ensured by the Cuckow method using primary level standards created by the Density Laboratory. Oscillation type density meter calibration is performed and liquid densities are determined using this device. In addition, the density values of various liquids can be determined with high accuracy using the primary level density measurement system.

The Viscosity Laboratory obtains its traceability from the kinematic dynamic viscosity values of twice distilled pure water at 20°C under normal atmospheric pressure (0.101325 MPa), corresponding to a density of 0.99820 g/cm³. The internationally recognized viscosity values of pure water are published in ISO/TR 3666:1998. Primary reference Ubbelohde viscometers are used by the Viscosity Laboratory to transfer traceability. In addition, traceability is transferred to kinematic and dynamic viscosity measurements of Newtonian liquids using primary level standards created in the laboratory.

Projects and Collaborations

17RPT02 RhoLiq Establishing traceability in liquid density measurements project

The aim of this project is to enhance the metrological competence of national metrology institutes in Europe in liquid density measurements and to disseminate primary level calibration services to national and international stakeholders through density reference materials. This project will lead to international recognition of density measurements and build mutual trust and cooperation at regional and international level. This will ensure the control of pre-packaged liquid products in line with European Union regulations and will strengthen competition in the manufacturing industry. The control of liquid volumes in pre-packaged products for consumer protection is increasing the demand for NMIs to provide industry-appropriate calibration services due to the growing market for these products. Improving the quality of density measurement will have a direct impact on the production of quality products. This will increase the competitiveness among national industrial firms and gain public trust in the markets. Therefore, as a result of the project, all national metrology institutes will achieve the expected performances with improved and enhanced liquid density measurements. The project has been completed and the preparation of EURAMET guidance documents on density measurements within the scope of its outputs is ongoing.

20IND13 Safest Sustainable advanced flow meter calibration project for the transportation sector

The aim of this project is to lay the foundation for improved flow metrology in the transportation sector, providing the reliable fuel consumption measurements needed in road and maritime transport. By enabling closer characterization of flowmeters to operational conditions and better consideration of the impact of fuel properties on flow measurement, innovation in the transport sector will be stimulated and the increased use of sustainable alternative transport fuels will be supported. Furthermore, the results will contribute to appropriate emission calculations.

The main objectives of the project:

- Develop the necessary infrastructure to assess the accuracy of flow meters and other systems used to measure fuel consumption in cars and trucks. -Develop the necessary infrastructure and procedures to assess the accuracy of flowmeters that have the potential to measure alternative fuel consumption in the maritime sector, close to the conditions of use in the field. - Develop a fuel property matrix that includes the properties of alternative fuels, such as bio-diesel (FAME), bio-alcohol and synthetic fuels. This will enable extrapolation of various fuels at higher temperatures and pressures. - Provide metrological input and preliminary research to achieve international standards, focusing on flow measurements under real ambient conditions in the transport sector. - Facilitate the adoption of the technology and measurement infrastructure to be developed in the project by the measurement supply chain (accredited laboratories, instrument manufacturers), standard developing organizations (IMO, ISO) and end users (transport sector).
