TÜBİTAK National Metrology Institute (UME) is a research and development institute operating under the umbrella of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). The aim of the Institute is to ensure the assurance of all measurements made in Turkey, to ensure the integration of these measurements into the international system, to develop existing and new measurement technologies, thus contributing to the establishment of a National Metrology System necessary to ensure the accuracy of measurements used in commercial and industrial environments, to ensure equality in national and international trade, to improve the quality of Turkish industrial products and to contribute to Turkey's scientific and technological development.
For this purpose, the Institute develops and maintains national measurement reference standards, ensures their traceability to the international measurement system, and makes them available to industry, science and research. The Institute, which constitutes a reference for the measurements made in Turkey and is the highest authority in this regard, cooperates with other units of TÜBİTAK, domestic and foreign organizations in its activities, and takes into consideration the principles of training both the researchers and technical personnel within its own organization and the technical personnel of the organizations outside its organization who are active in measurement, testing, calibration, analysis, control and metrology.
UME
Mission and Vision
Mission
To ensure measurement unity and reliability by conducting R&D studies in the field of measurement science in order to contribute to increasing the quality of life and the competitiveness of our country, and to establish, develop, maintain and disseminate internationally accepted reference measurement standards and techniques in this direction.
Vision
To be a global solution center in the field of measurement science.
UME
History
On 14 January 1982, the Prime Ministry decided to establish a metrology center "at a primary level and national scale, which would collectively meet the needs of the public and private sectors" and assigned TÜBİTAK to carry out feasibility studies. Upon the approval of the feasibility study prepared by TÜBİTAK by all relevant institutions, the Prime Ministry assigned TÜBİTAK to establish the Center in 1984. In 1986, the "National Center for Physical and Technical Measurement Standards" was established and the first laboratories became operational in the same year. On January 11, 1992, with the decision of TÜBİTAK Scientific Board, the National Center for Physics and Technical Measurement Standards was transformed into the National Metrology Institute (UME) within TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) and continued its activities. On January 1, 1997, UME was separated from TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center and started to carry out its activities directly under TÜBİTAK Presidency. In parallel with the country's development targets and economic developments, UME continues to invest in metrology and works to develop National Reference Standard Systems are being carried out rapidly.
As of today, our Institute continues its activities with 30 laboratories under the Physics, Chemistry and Mechanics Groups and more than 350 specialized personnel. With its new investments, TÜBİTAK UME has become an internationally recognized institution that ensures the traceability and integration of measurements into the international measurement system in the fields of chemicals, environment, biometrology, EMC, acoustics, high voltage experiments and experiments related to solar energy panels, etc., which are widely used in our country.
