The first official meeting of the SMIIC (Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries) Metrology Committee was held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 23-24 September 2013, hosted by Abu Dhabi Quality Conformity Council (ADQCC) and organized by TÜBİTAK UME.
Institute Director Dr. Fatih ÜSTÜNER and Mechanical Group Coordinator Dr. Sinan FANK represented TÜBİTAK UME at the meeting where 16 representatives from Azerbaijan, Benin, Bosnia and Herzegovina, United Arab Emirates, Burkina Faso, Kazakhstan, Libya, Sudan, Tunisia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt took part.
During the SMIIC Metrology Committee Meeting, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and ToR-Terms of Reference (ToR-Terms of Reference) defining the duties, functioning and structure of the Committee were finalized and submitted for voting. In addition, the planning of metrology activities among SMIIC member countries was carried out and the decisions taken and issues discussed during the Forum held in Antalya in 2012 were reviewed. Metrology infrastructures were introduced by the Institutes.
In the voting for the election of the chairman and vice-chairman of the Committee, Dr. Fatih ÜSTÜNER, Director of TÜBİTAK UME Institute, was elected as the Chairman of the SMIIC Metrology Committee and Zijad DZEMIC, Director of the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina (IMBiH), was elected as Vice Chairman for 3 years.
In the discussion part of the meeting, information was exchanged on the production of "Halal Food Reference Material" to be contributed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey and Egypt and a road map was drawn for the work to be carried out in this regard. It was also decided to organize international comparison measurements under the leadership of Turkey in order to ensure international recognition of SMIIC Metrology Committee member countries in the field of metrology. It was decided to prepare and place documents containing the infrastructure and capabilities of the member countries on the SMIIC web page. It was decided that the next meeting will be held in April 2014 in Istanbul during the "SMIIC Board of Directors Meeting".
The Standards and Metrology Institute of Islamic Countries (SMIIC) Forum, in which TÜBİTAK UME Managers and Experts also participated, was held in Antalya on 8-9 November 2012 with the participation of 160 delegates from 35 countries. The first meeting of the Metrology Technical Committee, which was decided to be established by the SMIIC Board of Directors at the Forum, was held on the last day of the Forum with the participation of only the Directors of Metrology Institutes, and it was decided that all Islamic Countries would cooperate with each other in the field of metrology under SMIIC for information sharing, service provision and technical support.
