The 2nd Meeting of the Directors of the National Metrology Institutes of TDT Member Countries was held in a hybrid format, hosted by the TÜBİTAK National Metrology Institute (UME).

Another significant milestone has been reached in the establishment of the Regional Metrology Union of Turkic States (TURKMET), which will strengthen cooperation in the field of metrology among member countries of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS). The 2nd Meeting of the Directors of the National Metrology Institutes of OTS Member States was held in a hybrid format, hosted by the TÜBİTAK National Metrology Institute (UME).

The meeting was attended by high-level representatives from the field of metrology from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkey, as well as the Deputy Secretary-General of the Organization of Turkic States.

The main agenda item of the meeting was the establishment of the organizational structure of TURKMET, which has been in the process of being established since 2024. In this context, the TURKMET bylaws were reviewed from start to finish and revised in accordance with the feedback from member countries. The revised charter will be forwarded to member countries by the TDT Secretariat for final feedback.

Metrological Cooperation Among Turkic States Is Strengthening

Under a cooperation protocol signed in 2023 between the metrology organizations of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkey, TÜBİTAK UME has been leading the efforts to establish TURKMETsince 2024.

The goal is to strengthen cooperation in the field of metrology between TURKMET and the Turkic states, prevent duplicate investments, and ensure that new metrological infrastructure is developed in line with shared needs and utilized effectively. With the launch of the Union, the aim is to enhance the scientific and technological capacities of TDT member countries, strengthen the integration of their quality infrastructure with international systems, and promote trade among the countries.

TURKMET Will Be Headquartered at TÜBİTAK UME

The bylaws establishing the legal entity of TURKMET—whose headquarters and secretariat are planned to be located in Turkey within TÜBİTAK UME—were submitted to TDT by TÜBİTAK UME.

TÜBİTAK UME also prepared a report on the TURKMET Secretariat’s annual budget plan and the member countries’ contribution shares and shared it with the TDT. Work related to the establishment process continues under the coordination of the TDT with the participation of member countries.

Another significant step has been taken toward the institutionalization of TURKMET. With the completion of TURKMET’s establishment, the aim is for the Turkic states to pool their resources in the areas of metrology and quality infrastructure and to create a stronger and more sustainable foundation for cooperation in science, technology, and trade.

The objectives include enhancing scientific and technological capacity, strengthening metrology and quality infrastructure, developing and effectively utilizing shared infrastructure, integrating with international quality systems, and promoting trade among the Turkic states.
