Inter-laboratory comparisons (ILC) and proficiency tests (PT) are important tools to assess the technical competence of calibration and/or testing laboratories. This is also specifically stated in the TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard and the TÜRKAK document. It is a requirement of the TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard and TURKAK that accredited laboratories or laboratories applying for accreditation participate in LAKs related to the measurement quantities within their scope of accreditation and have achieved successful results.
Infrared ear thermometers are widely used today to measure the temperature of the human body. It is very important for human health that ear thermometers are regularly calibrated with an appropriate and traceable calibration system. In many studies, it has been observed that only the manufacturer's declaration is not sufficient for the conformity of ear thermometers to the standard, and that measurements to be performed by a National Metrology Institute or accredited calibration laboratory are absolutely necessary.
An increasing number of accredited laboratories in our country are requesting to include ear thermometer calibrations in their temperature service scope. In order to meet this demand and to ensure that ear thermometer measurements, which are of great importance for health, are performed correctly, we, as TÜBİTAK UME Temperature Laboratory, have decided to organize an "Infrared Ear Thermometer Calibration Comparison" in the temperature range of 36 °C to 42 °C. With this comparison, which will be held for the first time in our country, we aim to ensure the quality of ear thermometer calibration measurements.
