May 20 World Metrology Day Celebrated

20 May World Metrology (Measurement Science) Day was celebrated with an organization hosted by TÜBİTAK UME in cooperation with the General Directorate of Metrology and Standardization of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

Opening speeches were made by Dr. Fatih ÜSTÜNER, Director of TÜBİTAK UME Institute, and Bayram TEK, Director General of Metrology and Standardization of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, at the events where approximately 400 participants including ministry units operating in the field of legal metrology, universities, representatives of the metrology sector, secondary and high school students attended. In his speech, Dr. ÜSTÜNER, Director of TÜBİTAK UME Institute, talked about the meaning and importance of World Metrology Day on May 20 and explained the new working areas and projects of TÜBİTAK UME. TEK, Director General of Metrology and Standardization of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, gave information about the studies and legal regulations in the field of Legal Metrology.

The awards were given for the "Metrology in Our Daily Lives" photography contest organized by the General Directorate of Metrology and Standardization of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology in cooperation with the Ministry of National Education at the high school level within the 81 Provincial Directorates of National Education, and the 1530 m. Campus Run and Table Tennis Tournament Competitions organized every year at TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus as part of the 20 May Metrology Day activities. In the continuation of the program, the exhibition of the winning and applicant photographs in the photo contest on "Metrology in Our Daily Life" and the measurement park, which was created by TÜBİTAK UME for metrology awareness and includes devices showing popular measurement areas, were visited. A street interview titled "How Much Metrology" prepared in cooperation with Yeditepe University Faculty of Communication students and TÜBİTAK UME was shown.

Prof. Dr. Ahmet İNCE, Dean of Yeditepe University Faculty of Science and Letters, who was invited to the World Metrology Day celebrations on May 20 as a guest speaker, shared with the participants the history of metrology, the point it has reached today and the necessity of including metrology in the education system due to its importance with his presentation titled "Human Beings Measure".

Participants showed great interest in the TÜBİTAK UME laboratory visits planned at the end of the program.

 

World Metrology Day

The Metre Convention was signed in Paris in 1875 to regularize the work carried out on measurement units and standards, to ensure the coordination of activities carried out in different countries and universal unity in measurement standards. Signed on May 20, 1875 by 17 countries, including the Ottoman Empire, the Metre Convention opened a new era in metrology, and May 20 is celebrated every year as "World Metrology Day" with various activities in our country as well as in more than 80 countries.
