TÜBİTAK UME hosted the 9th monthly meeting of the "SAR Measurement Using Vector Probes" project coded VectorSAR within the scope of the EU-funded EMPIR (European Metrology Program for Innovation and Research) program NRM (Normative) call on 29-30 January 2018.

The meeting was attended by 13 experts from three different countries including Turkey. The three-year project is being carried out by TÜBİTAK UME in partnership with the national metrology institutes of France (LNE) and the UK (NPL), as well as ART-FI, KAPTEOS and IMTelecom from France.

The specific absorption rate (SAR), which is the amount of energy absorbed by the human body when exposed to an electromagnetic field (EMF) and is a key parameter for mobile phones, is evaluated during the production of mobile phones.

The project aims to provide the methods, software and measurement data required for the traceable calibration and uncertainty analysis of vector-based probe systems used to measure the SAR value emitted by mobile devices.

This work will contribute to the IEC 62209-3 international standard and the future standardization of fifth generation (5G) devices within the IEC Technical Committee TC 106. In addition, the project aims to test mobile telecommunication devices with better reliability in terms of EMF exposure limits according to the IEC 62209-3 standard and reduce testing times, bringing a significant contribution to the telecommunications industry.

Started in 2017, the project is expected to be finalized in 2020.
