Subject: EMPIR 20OND13 Safest Announcement

EMPIR 20IND13 Safest "Sustainable flowmeter calibration in the transportation sector" project, in which TÜBİTAK UME Volume, Density and Viscosity Laboratory is one of the stakeholders, was completed as of August 2024.

Greenhouse gases produced by the road and maritime transportation sectors cause significant climate change. Some measures have recently been taken to reduce these emissions and decarbonize these sectors. The measures taken towards the use of alternative and synthetic fuels, improved engine testing and tightened emission standards also require progress in fluid metrology, as it is directly dependent on the quality of fluid measurements to determine engine efficiency through fuel consumption and emission measurements.

The aim of the EMPIR Safest 20IND13 "Sustainable Flow Meter Calibration for the Transportation Sector" project is to provide a basis for fluid metrology in this sector and to obtain reliable fuel consumption measurements. With the studies carried out, an infrastructure has been developed that allows to evaluate the measurement performance of flow variations depending on the fuel demands of vehicle and ship engines and the effect of flow characteristics on flowmeter performance has been evaluated. In addition, a matrix of flow characteristics for various alternative and synthetic fuels has been created. This matrix provided a basis for developing tools to significantly improve the quality of industrial online density meters and viscometers. Both advances in fluid metrology and expanded knowledge of fuel properties and the development of fuel properties measurements will drive innovation in the transportation sector.

The project results contribute to removing barriers to the use of sustainable alternative and synthetic transportation fuels. Furthermore, the results will contribute to appropriate emission calculations.
