TÜBİTAK UME continues to give higher education students the opportunity to take part in R&D projects in line with the goal of bringing qualified human resources to the country.
TÜBİTAK UME continued its support in 2020 with the aim of encouraging undergraduate and graduate students to gain R&D culture, take the first step into the research ecosystem and be encouraged to conduct research.
With the support provided by TÜBİTAK UME as a requirement of the national technology move and within the framework of the responsibilities it has assumed, higher education students have the opportunity to gain experience and practical training in their fields. In addition, they have the chance to get in close contact with scientific metrology by actively participating in projects carried out in high-tech laboratories.
In this context, in 2020, within the scope of the protocol signed by TÜBİTAK with the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), 17 PhD students who carry out academic studies in the fields of laser technologies, optics, electro-optics and photonics, biotechnology, micro and nanotechnology, nuclear energy, etc. were given the opportunity to take part in our Institute as scholarship students. The students were also included in important research and development activities.
Again, in 2020 alone, 102 undergraduate students were offered internship and workplace engineering education opportunities, enabling students to gain engineering application experience in various laboratories.
In addition, 21 fellows who took part in the Intern Researcher Fellowship Program (STAR), which was launched within the scope of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and attracted great interest across the country, took part in projects such as the development of a new reference material that enables PCR tests used in the detection of the COVID-19 virus, which is extremely important for our country, to give results with higher accuracy.
This year, together with the fellows who continue to actively contribute to R&D studies at our Institute, 24 new STAR fellows will be included in the studies within the scope of the second call announcement published by TÜBİTAK BİDEB, and TÜBİTAK UME will host a total of 45 trainee research fellows.
TÜBİTAK UME will continue to support the scientific development of university students both this year and in the coming years with the responsibility of being the country's leading organization in the field of metrology.
