At the 26th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) hosted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in Versailles, France on November 14-16, 2018, changes in the definitions of kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole units were unanimously adopted.
Prof. Dr. Necip CAMUŞÇU, Director General of Metrology and Standardization of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, and Dr. Mustafa ÇETİNTAŞ, Director of TÜBİTAK National Metrology Institute, attended the CGPM, which is the highest level conference in the field of metrology in the world and is held every 4 years.
The decision adopted at the conference, attended by representatives from nearly 100 different countries, with 60 countries, including Turkey, having the right to vote, means that international units of measurement (SI) will now be defined in terms of constants that describe the natural world. This will ensure the future stability of the SI and allow the use of new technologies, including quantum technologies, to implement the definitions. The changes, which will end the use of physical objects to define units of measurement, will take effect from May 20, 2019.
On the other hand, at the General Conference on Weights and Measures, the highest level organization of the metrology world, where a Director of TÜBİTAK UME was invited as a speaker for the first time since its establishment in 1992, Dr. Mustafa ÇETİNTAŞ made a presentation on the "Capacity Building and Knowledge Transfer Program", a training program for developing metrology institutes carried out by UME in cooperation with BIPM.
TÜBİTAK UME presentation at the conference
This invitation to TÜBİTAK UME, which has gained a privileged status in the metrology world in recent years, especially with the quality of the services it has provided to more than 40 countries all over the world, is a sign that the scientific and technical level it has reached is closely observed by BIPM.
