TÜBİTAK National Metrology Institute successfully took part in the international key comparison with the measurement results obtained in the Kibble Balance (KB) experiment, which was conducted to realize the new definition of the kilogram unit.

TÜBİTAK UME has succeeded in having its new measurement concept accepted by the metrology world as a result of the Planck constant measurements taken in the Kibble Balance experiment and the international key comparison with the metrological institutes of the world's leading countries such as Germany, the United States of America, China, France, Switzerland, Japan and Canada.

Unlike conventional KB systems, led by metrology institutes in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, which operate in a vacuum environment, the setup developed by TÜBİTAK UME can operate in an atmospheric environment. This offers significant advantages in terms of cost and application.

Turkey, which receives traceability from the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in France for mass measurements, will both secure national mass measurements and eliminate foreign dependency by realizing the kilogram unit at the first level with this new technological product developed by TÜBİTAK UME with completely domestic and national facilities. In addition, TÜBİTAK UME will be able to provide international mass calibration services to the metrology institutes of other countries and even provide technology transfer to developing institutes. Recently, an action plan was signed with Kazakhstan to establish the infrastructure according to the new definitions of Mass and Temperature units.

Based on the principle of balancing mechanical and electrical power, Kibble Balancing Test Apparatus can be designed with different geometries and experimental protocols. Turkey, one of the few countries in the world to have this setup, also contributes to the studies carried out around the world.

Within the scope of the project it has been conducting since 2014, TÜBİTAK UME has exceeded another critical threshold on the way to realizing the new definition of the kilogram with this result obtained with the new measurement concept it has developed by following an alternative path to the leading institutes in the field of scientific metrology.
