TÜBİTAK UME Realized First Commercialized Technology Transfer

The technology transfer of the Infrared Ear Thermometer (IRET) Reference Calibration System, which was realized by TÜBİTAK UME Medical Metrology Laboratory and Temperature Laboratory, to Yeditepe University was realized in cooperation with TÜBİTAK Technology Transfer Office and Yeditepe University Technology Transfer Office (YUTTO).

The Infra-Red Ear Thermometer (IRET) Reference Calibration System, which is important in terms of being the first technology transfer of TÜBİTAK UME, was licensed by TÜBİTAK to Yeditepe University for 5 (five) years to be used in the Metrology and Calibration Laboratory (YUKAL) of the Department of Physics.

The calibrations of infrared ear thermometers, which have been used extensively in the field of health in our country in recent years, could not be performed within the traceability chain. The project, which was initiated to establish a permanent measurement system for these calibrations at TÜBİTAK UME using domestic facilities and to participate in research by making prototype portable measuring devices in this field, has come to fruition with the realization of the first technology transfer.

Infrared ear thermometers, which measure the thermal radiation emitted from the eardrum in terms of wavelength and convert it into temperature units, have gained even more importance, especially during the pandemic period when hygienic measurements are important, as they can measure without touching unlike traditional thermometers.

Thanks to this system, which complies with the relevant standards and is established with domestic and private production, the calibrations of infrared ear thermometers on the market can now be made within the traceability chain in our country.

This system, which can be used by hospitals, calibration laboratories, research centers and private companies, will also enable the production of portable calibrators. In addition, with the use of the system, which has advantages such as providing joint research opportunities in metrology projects with other countries, calibrations in this field will be expanded throughout the country.
