At the 11th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States (CIS) held in Kyrgyzstan on 6 November 2024, it was decided to accelerate the work on the establishment of a metrology organization called TURKMET in order to ensure metrological unity among member countries.

The establishment of TURKMET, which is extremely important for the metrological activities of the members of the Organization to have a strong organizational structure under a single roof, was also included and approved in the Declaration and Action Plan signed at the 1st CIS Science, Technology, Innovation and Industry Ministers Meeting held in Istanbul on 25-26 October 2024.

On November 3, 2023, at the 10th CIS Summit held in Kazakhstan, a "Cooperation Protocol" was signed between the metrological organizations of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkey. Within the scope of the protocol, a full agreement was reached on the establishment of the Turkic States Regional Metrology Organization (TURKMET) in the context of ensuring metrological unity among the Turkic States, the establishment and joint use of new metrological infrastructures by avoiding duplicate investments, and, above all, enriching trade by increasing the scientific and technological development of the CIS member countries.

Within the scope of increasing the influence of the Turkic States in world trade and integrating their quality infrastructures into the international quality system, a proposal for the establishment of TURKMET within the CIS under the leadership of Turkey was prepared by TÜBİTAK UME in May this year with the significant contributions of the Azerbaijan Metrology Institute and submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the CIS General Secretariat by TÜBİTAK Presidency.

After TURKMET is given a legal identity, it is planned that the metrology institutes of countries such as Turkmenistan, Hungary, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Tajikistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania will participate as full and/or substitute members in the first stage, in addition to TDT members.
