The 15th Annual Meeting of the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) held in Istanbul on November 1O, 2024 was hosted by TÜBİTAK UME, Ministry of Industry and Technology.
TUBITAK UME Acting Institute Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa ÇETİNTAŞ chaired the meeting, which was held in a hybrid format, in addition to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Gambia, Iraq, Indonesia, Gambia and Iraq, which are members of the Gulf States Metrology Association (GULFMET) and SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC), A total of 60 people participated, including 41 representatives from Cameroon, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, and 19 representatives from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Palestine and Uganda via teleconference.
At the meeting where the election of SMIIC MC President and Vice President for the period 2025-2027 was held, Saeed Mohamed Almheiri, Executive Director of MOIAT/EMI from the United Arab Emirates was elected as the President and Abdulrahman Rashed Alaskar, Director of Chemical Measurement Department of SASO-NMCC from Saudi Arabia was elected as the Vice President.
In the meeting where the issues related to halal product testing and certification, production of related reference materials and scientific studies and developments in other metrology fields in SMIIC Metrology Council member countries were discussed, information was given on the possibilities of TÜBİTAK UME, which has a comprehensive infrastructure in this field, the projects it carries out, the joint studies that can be carried out with other member countries and the contributions that our country can make to Islamic countries.
In the meeting where presentations were made on TÜBİTAK UME's quantum metrology and digitalization studies in the field of metrology, topics such as SMIIC MC inter-laboratory comparisons, SMIIC MC R&D project program were also included. In the meeting, information on the activities of the Medical Metrology Working Group, the establishment of metrology laboratories at the Azerbaijan Metrology Institute (AzMI), and the activities of the Gulf Countries Metrology Association (GULFMET) were also given, and the contributions that the members of the Metrology Council, especially TÜBİTAK UME, could make were evaluated.
SMIIC, which aims to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation in order to eliminate incompatibilities in technical issues that constitute an obstacle to trade among Islamic countries, was established in 2010 within the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries.
