TÜBİTAK UME celebrated World Metrology Day with an information seminar on the changes in the definitions of kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole units, which entered into force on May 20, 2019 and are considered as a revolution in the metrology world.
The bill, which was adopted by the 25th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) in November 2014 and approved to enter into force on 20 May 2019 at the 26th CGPM meeting in November 2018, amended the definitions of 4 of the 7 SI units and redefined the kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole units in terms of the universal constants Planck's constant, elementary charge constant, Boltzmann's constant and Avogadro's constant respectively.
TÜBİTAK UME organized a seminar on World Metrology Day on May 20, informing its stakeholders about the content of these changes, the innovations they will bring and TÜBİTAK UME's work on the "metrological revolution".
TUBITAK UME Director Dr. Mustafa ÇETİNTAŞ, who made the opening speech at the seminar attended by representatives of accredited calibration and testing laboratories and academicians and students from various universities, gave information about the reasons for these changes and the effects they will have on the metrology world.
TUBITAK UME Communication Officer Uğur AKKAYA made an entertaining presentation titled "How Much Metrology" about the place of measurement and the change of measurement definitions in our lives, and Dr. Beste KORUTLU from TUBITAK UME Electrodynamics Laboratory and Sevda KAÇMAZ from TUBITAK UME Mass Laboratory shared information about the project carried out by TUBITAK UME in this field and its aftermath with their presentations on "Change of Kilogram Unit Definition".
Following the presentations of TUBITAK UME Voltage Laboratory Supervisor Mehedin ARİFOVİÇ on "Ampere Unit Definition Change", TUBITAK UME Temperature Laboratory Supervisor Dr. Murat KALEMCİ on "Kelvin Unit Definition Change" and TUBITAK UME Director Technical Assist. (V) Dr. Süleyman Zühtü CAN on "Mole Unit Definition Change", laboratory visits were organized for the participants.
