TÜBİTAK UME hosted the 7th Annual Meeting of the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) held on January 28-29, 2020.
In addition to Turkey, 44 representatives from 19 member and observer countries of the Organization of Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC) and SMIIC, including Afghanistan, Benin, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Iran, Cameroon, Kyrgyzstan, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Malaysia, Mali, Uzbekistan, Senegal, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Tunisia and Uganda, attended the meeting.
In the meeting chaired by TÜBİTAK UME, the participants were informed about the establishment of the Excellence Metrology Center for Islamic Countries (EMCIC) in Turkey, the functioning of this structure and the steps to be followed to realize the project.
In addition, together with the latest developments in the SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC) and the national metrology bodies of the member countries, possible solutions for ensuring measurement unity in the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, halal product certification, overcoming technical barriers in trade and integration into the international measurement system, and the contributions TÜBİTAK UME can make in these areas were also discussed.
At the meeting, where the latest status and importance of the work carried out within the scope of the SMIIC MC Capacity Building Program (Metrology Council Technical Capacity Building Program - TCBP) were discussed, it was decided to extend the applications for the 2020 period until the end of February 2020 within the scope of this program and that the second period of the program will be carried out by Saudi Arabia and Bosnia and Herzegovina together with Turkey.
SMIIC was established in 2010 within the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC), aiming to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation in order to eliminate incompatibilities in technical issues that constitute an obstacle to trade among Islamic countries.
