TÜBİTAK UME hosted the 9th Meeting of the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) held in Istanbul on October 8-9, 2021.
The meeting, which was held in a hybrid (combined teleconference and physical participation) format for the participation of members who could not physically participate due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was attended by 28 representatives from Turkey, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC) members and invited countries Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Iran, Iran, Cameroon, Kazakhstan, Libya, Uzbekistan, Senegal and Sudan; A total of 29 representatives from Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Burkina Faso, Indonesia, Morocco, Gambia, Guinea, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Uganda and Jordan participated via teleconference.
During the meeting, a progress report on the activities carried out in 2021 within the scope of the SMIIC Metrology Council 2021 - 2023 Work Plan prepared by the working group consisting of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Côte d'Ivoire, Iran, Cameroon, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Uganda under the chairmanship of Turkey was presented.
In addition, information was given about the road map prepared for the SMIIC MC member countries, which are relatively less developed or developing, to reach the level of developed members, and the contributions that the members of the Metrology Council, especially TÜBİTAK UME, can make in this regard were expressed.
In the meeting where information was shared about the scientific studies and developments in the fields of halal product testing and certification, production of related reference materials and other metrology fields in the member countries of the SMIIC Metrology Council, information was given on the possibilities of TÜBİTAK UME, which has a comprehensive infrastructure in this field, the projects it carries out, the joint studies that can be carried out with other member countries and the contributions that our country can make to Islamic Countries.
The gains that the Islamic Countries Metrology Center of Excellence, which is planned to be established under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UME and whose project preparations have been completed, will provide to the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the importance of realizing this project were once again emphasized at the meeting.
SMIIC was established in 2010 within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), aiming to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation in order to eliminate incompatibilities in technical issues that constitute an obstacle to trade among Islamic countries.
