TÜBİTAK UME hosted the 6th Annual Meeting of the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) held in Istanbul on April 18-19, 2019.
In addition to Turkey, 50 representatives from 27 countries including Albania, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Djibouti, Morocco, Gambia, Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Cameroon, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Mali, Niger, Uzbekistan, Senegal, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Thailand, Tunisia and Uganda, members of the Organization of Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC) and SMIIC, attended the meeting.
In the meeting chaired by TÜBİTAK UME, the establishment of the Excellence Metrology Center in Turkey in accordance with the decision taken by the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC) and the functioning of this structure, the work of the representatives on halal products, the results of the survey answered by the participants and the laboratory infrastructures and budgets of the countries based on this survey were discussed.
In addition, possible solutions for ensuring measurement unity in the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, halal product certification, overcoming technical barriers in trade and integration into the international measurement system, and the contributions TÜBİTAK UME can make in these areas were also discussed.
In addition, capacity building trainings that can be organized to improve the metrology and halal life infrastructures of the member countries and cooperation for the improvement of laboratory infrastructures and the establishment of new infrastructures were also evaluated.
A Task Force Group (TFG) consisting of Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, Iran, Iran, Uzbekistan, Uganda, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the SMIIC Secretariat was also established at the meeting to conduct a feasibility study and design a project for the Metrology Center of Excellence, which is planned to be established in OIC member countries to meet the needs in the field of halal life and metrology.
SMIIC was established in 2010 within the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC), aiming to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation in order to eliminate incompatibilities in technical issues that constitute an obstacle to trade among Islamic countries.
