TÜBİTAK UME, which is the chairman of the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute of Islamic Countries (SMIIC MC), participated in the 19th SMIIC Board of Directors and 14th General Assembly meetings held in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on November 4-5, 2019.
In the meetings attended by representatives of the Organization for the Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC) and SMIIC member countries as well as Turkey, the Russian Federation was accepted as an observer member and the SMIIC membership applications of the Republic of Indonesia and Kuwait were accepted, provided that they will be valid from the beginning of 2020.
During the meetings, the SMIIC Annual Report and the 2019-2020 Strategy Plan were presented by the Secretariat General, while the reports of the Standing Committees on Finance and Strategy of the SMIIC Board of Directors and the Councils on Standardization, Metrology and Accreditation were presented by the heads of the councils.
Information on the 2019 activities and future plans of the SMIIC Metrology Council, chaired by TÜBİTAK UME, was shared by Dr. Mustafa ÇETİNTAŞ, President of the Council.
In addition, information was given about the work of the Task Force Group (TFG) established for the Excellence Metrology Center for Islamic Countries (Excellence Metrology Center for Islamic Countries), which is planned to be established under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UME to ensure measurement unity in the member countries of the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC) and integration into the international measurement system, development and certification of halal product test methods, overcoming technical barriers in trade, R&D activities and technology development.
In addition, the Technical Capacity Building Program (Technical Capacity Building Program) prepared by the Metrology Council for the period 2020-2021 for training and joint project studies in order to improve the capacity of R&D personnel in SMIIC member countries was introduced.
SMIIC was established in 2010 within the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC), aiming to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation in order to eliminate incompatibilities in technical issues that constitute an obstacle to trade among Islamic countries.
