The 22nd Board of Directors and 16th General Assembly Meeting of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) was held on November 1-2, 2021 in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
Representing Turkey, Dr. Mustafa ÇETİNTAŞ, Director of TÜBİTAK UME, Prof. Dr. Adem ŞAHİN, President of TSE and Zafer SOYLU, President of Halal Accreditation Agency (HAK) attended the meeting.
During the meeting, information on the 2021 activities and future plans of the SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC), of which TÜBİTAK UME is the chairman, was shared by Dr. Mustafa ÇETİNTAŞ, the chairman of the council.
In addition, information was given about the work of the Islamic Countries Excellence Metrology Center, which is planned to be established under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UME to ensure measurement unity in the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and integration into the international measurement system, development and certification of halal product test methods, overcoming technical barriers in trade, R&D activities and technology development.
İhsan ÖVÜT, nominated by the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE), was re-elected as the Secretary General of SMIIC, of which Turkey is a permanent member, for the period 2022-2024. At the Board of Directors Meeting, it was decided that SMIIC will be represented by TSE in the Standardization Council and Halal Accreditation Agency in the Accreditation Council.
SMIIC was established in 2010 within the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC), aiming to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation in order to eliminate incompatibilities in technical issues that constitute an obstacle to trade among Islamic countries.
