TÜBİTAK UME hosted the 10th Annual Meeting of the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) held in Istanbul on May 16, 2022.
In addition to Turkey, 45 representatives from Albania, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Iraq, Iran, Iran, Cameroon, Kazakhstan, Libya, Malaysia, Mali, Mali, Mali, Mali, Mali, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Pakistan, Senegal, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda and Jordan, members of Gulf Countries Metrology Association (GULFMET) and SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC) attended the meeting. The representative of Saudi Arabia also participated via teleconference.
At the meeting where SMIIC MC President and Vice President elections were held, Dr. Mustafa ÇETİNTAŞ, Acting Director of TÜBİTAK UME Institute, was unanimously elected once again as the President of the SMIIC Metrology Council, which he has served uninterruptedly since 2014. ÇETİNTAŞ, who will also serve for the 2022-2024 period, will be the President of the Metrology Council for the 4th time.
In the meeting where the issues related to halal product testing and certification, production of related reference materials and scientific studies and developments in other metrology fields in SMIIC Metrology Council member countries were discussed, information was given on the possibilities of TÜBİTAK UME, which has a comprehensive infrastructure in this field, the projects it carries out, the joint studies that can be carried out with other member countries and the contributions that our country can make to Islamic countries.
Information was given about the revision of the SMIIC MC 2021-2023 Work Plan carried out under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UME and the activities carried out in 2021 within the scope of this plan, R&D projects and other scientific studies carried out by TÜBİTAK UME under the roof of GULFMET.
In the meeting where information about the road map prepared by TÜBİTAK UME for the development of SMIIC MC member countries in the field of scientific metrology was also given, the contributions that the members of the Metrology Council, especially TÜBİTAK UME, could make were evaluated.
In addition, the gains that the Islamic Countries Metrology Center of Excellence (EMCIC), which is planned to be established under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UME and whose project preparations have been completed, will provide to the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the importance of realizing this project were once again emphasized at the meeting.
SMIIC, which aims to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation in order to eliminate incompatibilities in technical issues that constitute an obstacle to trade among Islamic countries, was established in 2010 within the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries.
