Kazakhstan Institute of Standardization and Metrology (KazStandard) hosted the 11th Meeting of the Metrology Council (MC) of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 28-29 October 2022.
In addition to Turkey, 30 representatives from Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Uganda and Jordan, members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC), attended the meeting physically, while 16 representatives from Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Palestine, Cameroon, Senegal and Thailand participated via teleconference.
During the meeting, a progress report on the activities carried out in 2022 within the scope of the SMIIC Metrology Council 2021 - 2023 Work Plan was presented, as well as the contributions that the members of the Metrology Council, especially TÜBİTAK UME, can make in order for SMIIC MC member countries, which are relatively less developed or developing, to reach the level of developed members.
The gains that the Islamic Countries Center of Excellence Metrology (IÜMMM), which is planned to be established under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UME and whose project preparations have been completed, will provide to the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the importance of realizing this project were once again emphasized at the meeting. With the unanimous vote of the participating members, the SMIIC MC President and Vice President were authorized to take the necessary initiatives at the international level for the realization of the project.
At the meeting, it was also decided to organize an international event by the SMIIC General Secretariat in order to explain the impact of metrology on the country's economy and exports to the representatives of the member country Ministries based on the intense demand of the participating members.
SMIIC was established in 2010 within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), aiming to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation in order to eliminate incompatibilities in technical issues that constitute an obstacle to trade among Islamic countries.
