TUBITAK National Metrology Institute's two international patent applications in the field of Optics-Photonics were accepted by the Japan Patent Office, the European Patent Office and the US Patent and Trademark Office.

"Dynamic Monitoring of the Instantaneous Zero Angular Velocity Value of an Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyroscope (IFOG)" by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz ÇELİKEL and "Fiber Optic Collection Sphere Based Laser Energy Meter and Traceable Calibration System to Primary Level Standards" by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz ÇELİKEL and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ferhat SAMETOĞLU were the first patent applications of TÜBİTAK UME in Physics.

Thus, these inventions were registered on behalf of TÜBİTAK in the USA, Japan and European countries and regions where the most advanced technologies in Optics/Photonics, Fiber Optic Sensors, Lasers and INS are produced.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz ÇELİKEL's project "Dynamic Monitoring of the Instantaneous Zero Angular Velocity Value of the Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyroscope (IFOG)" brings a solution to the errors experienced in Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) used in platforms such as aircraft, satellites, helicopters, mobile type missiles and submarines that need autonomous movement and real-time positioning independent of GPS signals.

In this invention, by eliminating the negative situations in INS systems, the "Real Time Instantaneous Voltage Value Corresponding to Instantaneous Angular Velocity" is now subtracted from the "Instantaneous Voltage Value Corresponding to Real Time Zero Velocity", not the "Voltage Value Corresponding to Predetermined Zero Velocity". For this process, two C-based embedded software using microprocessor-controlled Micro Electro Mechanical System-MEMS Fiber Optic switches with an additional fiber winding to the phase modulated IFOG sensing winding and a new and unique concept for open/closed loop phase modulation IFOG sensors and a set of methods for the implementation of this concept were developed.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz ÇELİKEL and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ferhat SAMETOĞLU's invention "Fiber Optic Collecting Sphere Based Laser Energy Meter and Calibration System Traceable to Primary Level Standards" enables the measurement of the average pulse energy of laser sources emitting in the pulsed regime in the range of 16.5 pJ - 100 mJ traceable to primary level standards thanks to the uniquely designed system. In addition to this function, with this invention, it will also be possible to produce average laser energy pulse energies at various levels, to produce "reference" average laser pulse energies by measuring these average laser pulse energies with the same system in a manner traceable to primary level standards, and to perform traceable calibrations of military and commercial laser energy meters in the aforementioned energy range with the "reference" average laser pulse energies produced.

Apart from these two inventions, which have great prestige value for the world of metrology, TÜBİTAK UME has a total of 14 patent applications, 7 national and 7 international, whose application process has been officially initiated. Of these, country and regional applications have been made for 3 international applications for which a positive examination report has been received, and their follow-up continues.
