TÜBİTAK UME Awarded First International Patents in Physics

Two patents have been awarded to TÜBİTAK National Metrology Institute (TÜBİTAK UME) in the field of photonics by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (UPTO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO).

“Dynamically monitoring the instantaneous zero rotation rate voltage of interferometric fiber optic gyroscope” of which Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz ÇELİKEL is the inventor and “Fiber coupled integrating sphere based laser energy meter and calibration system (FCIS Based-LEMCS) traceable to primary level standards”, jointly invented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz ÇELİKEL and Assoc. Prof. Ferhat SAMETOĞLU were the first patents awarded to TÜBİTAK UME in the field of physics.

The patents were registered to TÜBİTAK UME in the United States, Japan and European countries that are parties to the European Patent Convention.

The patent registered under the title “Dynamically monitoring the instantaneous zero rotation rate voltage of interferometric fiber optic gyroscope” developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz ÇELİKEL resolves errors encountered in inertial navigation systems (INS) utilized in jets, satellites, helicopters, missiles, and submarines which need to navigate autonomously and need real-time positioning independent of GPS signals.

The “Fiber coupled integrating sphere based laser energy meter and calibration system (FCIS Based-LEMCS) traceable to primary level standards”, co-invented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz ÇELİKEL and Assoc. Prof. Ferhat SAMETOĞLU, allows for the measurement of the average pulse energy within the range of 16.5 pJ - 100 mJ emitted by pulsed-type laser sources generating infinite laser pulse train in time domain and for the calibration of commercial laser energy meters with traceability to primary level standards. The system generates average laser energy pulses within the stated range, which, after being measured with traceability to primary standards with the same system, can then be used as references for the traceable calibration of laser energy meters.

Currently, TÜBİTAK UME has an additional 7 international and 7 patent applications in process.
