11th Meeting of SMIIC Metrology Council Held in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan Institute of Standardization and Metrology (KazStandard) hosted the 11th Meeting of The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) Metrology Council (MC) held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on October 28-29, 2022.

In addition to Turkey, members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation OIC) and SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC) a total of 30 representatives from Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Uganda and Jordan attended the meeting physically, while 16 representatives from Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Palestine, Cameroon, Senegal and Thailand attended the meeting via teleconference.

The progress report about the activities carried out in 2022 within the scope of the SMIIC Metrology Council 2021 - 2023 Work Plan were presented at the meeting, as well as the contributions that the members of the Metrology Council, especially TÜBİTAK UME, could make in order for the relatively less developed or developing SMIIC MC member countries to reach the level of the developed members were discussed.

The benefits of the Islamic Countries Metrology Excellence Center (IUMMM), which is planned to be established under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UME and whose initial preparations have been completed, to the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the importance of the realisation of this project were emphasized once again at the meeting. With the unanimous vote of the participating members, the SMIIC MC Chair and t and Vice Chair were authorized to take the necessary initiatives at the international level for the realization of the project.

Based on the intense demand of the meeting participants, it was also decided to organize an international event by the SMIIC General Secretariat in order to explain the impact of metrology on the country's economy and exports to the Ministry representatives of the member countries.

SMIIC, which aims to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation with the aim of eliminating incompatibilities in technical issues that hinder trade between Islamic countries, was established in 2010 under umbrella of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
