TUBITAK UME has been accepted as a full member of the Consultative Committee on Mass and Derived Quantities (CCM) serving within the International Committee on Weights and Measures (CIPM).
According to the decision taken at the 112th CIPM meeting, the application of TUBITAK UME National Metrology Institute, which has been an official observer member for more than 20 years, to become an official principal member was approved.
This decision means confirming that UME is actively participating in internationally recognized scientific projects and activities in the main activity groups under the CCM. One of the most important of these projects is the development of the Kibble Balance, a metrological electromechanical measuring instrument which is used to redefine the unit of mass of kilograms based on the Planck basic physical constant.
CCM official membership is of great importance in terms of being able to closely follow the developments in this field, contribute to the flow of information and benefit from this flow, as well as take part in the decision-making mechanism on issues such as which research to focus on, evaluation of new methods.
CCM, which was established in 1980 and is the most authoritative committee directing all studies and decisions in the field of Mass and Derived Quantities in the world, has 27 official full members and 4 official observer members. CCM also includes 8 working groups under the Liquid Fluid, Gravimeter, Mass, Strategy and Coordination of the Common Recognition Agreement, Density and Viscosity, Force and Torque, Hardness, Pressure and Vacuum, and the dissemination task group after the redefinition of the unit of mass.
During the application process for full membership to CCM, a written report was sent to CCM, including the participated key comparisons, scientific activities of TUBITAK UME in areas such as Mass, Vacuum, Pressure, Force, Torque, Hardness, Fluid and Gas Liquids, Solid and Liquid Density, Liquid Volume, Gravimeter, all national and international projects and scientific journal articles that contribute significantly to the activities of CCM. In addition, regarding the written report submitted, an oral presentation was also made to the participants at the 19th CCM meeting on May 25-26, 2023.
CIPM Consultative Committees operate to provide expertise in technical issues related to metrology, provide a basis for international information exchange and cooperation in the fields of metrology, and contribute to the harmonization of measurements on a global scale by encouraging the traceability of national measurement standards to the international system of units.
Apart from being an indicator of being at an advanced level in the field of Scientific Metrology, membership in consultative committees, which also have an important value in terms of prestige, is only open to the most internationally recognized metrology institutes and laboratories that have scientifically significant studies in their field, have been able to prove their measurement abilities by international comparisons.
TÜBİTAK UME, which is among the leading metrology institutes in the world with the number of committees it is a member of, has further cemented its respected place in the world metrology ecosystem with this success.
