September 23-24. The meeting was organized by TÜBİTAK UME and hosted by the Abu Dhabi Quality Conformity Council (ADQCC).
TÜBİTAK UME was represented by Acting Director Dr. Fatih Üstüner and Mechanical Group Coordinator Dr. Sinan Fank at the meeting, which was attended by 16 other representatives from Azerbaijan, Benin, Bosnia – Herzegovina, United Arab Emirates, Burkina Faso, Kazakhstan, Libya, Sudan, Tunisia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
At the meeting, the Memorandum of Understanding and Terms of Reference defining the duties, operating procedures and structure of the Metrology Committee were finalized through discussion and approved. Additionally, planning for metrology activities among SMIIC member countries was completed and the discussion points and decisions of the Forum held in 2012 in Antalya were reviewed. Each representative also gave a presentation on their countries’ metrology infrastructure.
As a result of elections for the committee’s chairmanship and vice chairmanship, TÜBİTAK UME Acting Director Dr. Fatih Üstüner was chosen as chairman and Bosnia-Herzegovina Institute of Metrology (IMBiH) Director Zijad Djemic was chosen as vice-chairman, both for a period of three years.
In the discussion part of the agenda, views were exchanged on the subject of the production of reference materials for halal foods and a road map was drafted for the required studies to be carried out by Turkey, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Egypt on this subject. A decision was also made to organize comparison studies to be led by TÜBİTAK UME towards securing international recognition for the metrology capabilities of the member states of the Metrology Committee. Representatives agreed to post information on the infrastructure and capabilities of member countries to the SMIIC website. Finally, it was agreed that the next meeting of the Metrology Committee would be held at the end of the SMICC Board of Directors Meeting scheduled in April 2014 in Istanbul.
The SMIIC Forum, attended by 160 delegates from 35 countries including TUBİTAK UME management and staff, was held in Antalya on November 8-9, 2012. The SMIIC Board of Directors made the decision to establish the SMIIC Metrology Committee at the Forum and the first informal meeting of the committee was held with the attendance of directors of metrology institutes that were present. It was decided that Islamic countries would cooperate in the area of metrology through information exchange, service provision and technical support under the umbrella of SMIIC.
