The First Gulf Metrology Forum was organized in Doha, Qatar on December 14-15, 2015 through the cooperation of the Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting (GOIC), the Ministry of Environment of Qatar, the Gulf Association for Metrology (GULFMET), the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) and the Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology (QS).
The forum’s was held with the main purpose of promoting the exchange of experience among executives, experts, specialists and technical personnel, who are directly related to the field of metrology. TÜBİTAK UME was represented by it Director, Dr. Mustafa Çetintaş, who presented on the historical evolution of TÜBİTAK UME.
Other invited speakers at the forum included the Director of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) Dr. Martin Milton, Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) Dr. Peter Fisk, Director of the International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML) Dr. Stephen Patoray, and Dr. Kim Hyong-Ha, Prinicipal Research Scientist at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS).
Among the subjects on the agenda at the Gulf Metrology Forum were the future of metrology, new frontiers of metrology in medicine, biology and environmental science; nanotechnologies, metrology and quality management practices, metrology in petroleum, natural gas and other key industries, the impact of legal metrology on society and examples of practices in metrology from various countries.
The forum provided a necessary space for discussion of topics such as international cooperation to support the development of metrology, coordination of metrology activities within GCC and the development of the supportive legal, legislative and scientific foundations through the organization of a number of discussion panels and workshops.
The Gulf Metrology Forum was significant for the opportunity it afforded all attendees to explore possibilities for greater cooperation in metrology in the Gulf region.
