TÜBİTAK-UME hosted the kick off meeting of the “Development of RF and Microwave Metrology Capability” project on 14-15 June 2016, which will be conducted in the scope of the EU (European Union) funded EMPIR (European Metrology Program for Innovation and Research) RPOT (Research Potential Project) call.
The coordinator of the project is Dr. Murat Celep from TÜBİTAK UME and 14 experts from 8 countries including Turkey joined the meeting. This project has drawn attention because it is the fourth EMRP/EMPIR project that TÜBİTAK UME is coordinating.
The project is planned to be completed in three years. Besides TÜBİTAK UME, the metrology institutes of Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Poland, Greece, Egypt, and also Catalonia Technical University of Spain are project partners. Furthermore, twenty different firms from different countries will be supporting the project works.
Firstly it is planned to organize training, comparison, workshop activities and know-how transfer between developed and developing countries’ metrology institutes which want to develop their RF and microwave metrology infrastructure within the European Union and the candidate countries. Hereby, it is supposed that the unused infrastructure in the scope of RF and microwave metrology at some institutes will become more favourable to make a research.
In the scope of the project, it is aimed to make a research on common issues such as realization of S-parameter measurements, traceability of S-parameters, characterisation of RF low power sensor and high power attenuator, investigation of harmonic effects on low power measurements, measurement of the signal sources output voltage reflection coefficients, improvement on the electromagnetic compatibility tests.
The output of the project will be accessible to the developing metrology institutes and their customers who are in the position of accredited calibration/test laboratories. Also, it is aimed that the project outputs will be a guide document for the employees and beginners on RF and microwave metrology area.
Nowadays, communication systems and equipment have entered heavily in our daily life, so the test and calibration accuracy based on RF and microwave metrology of communication products working at high frequency have of great importance in terms of quality and reliability of products specifically designed for us to get a more comfortable standard of living.
