The Fourth Annual Meeting of the Metrology Council operating under the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) was hosted by TÜBİTAK UME on May 8, 2017, in Istanbul.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the national metrology institutes of Afghanistan, Benin, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burkino Faso, Algeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Palestine, Gabon, Guinea, Iraq, Iran, Cameroon, Libya, Mali, Pakistan, Jordan, Senegal, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia, besides TÜBİTAK UME.
The SMIIC Metrology Council meets every year to discuss activities undertaken over the past year, plans for new activities over the next year, opportunities for collaboration among members, and challenges faced by OIC member countries in the area of metrology and the means to overcome them. At this meeting, the subject of metrological control and standardization of halal food production was also discussed and information on the latest scientific studies in this field was shared.
At the meeting, invitee Mr. Onur Esen of the General Directorate of Metrology and Standardization at the Turkish Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology gave a presentation on legal metrology in Turkey and its importance for trade and the economy.
The meeting also featured the election of Dr. Mustafa Çetintaş, Director of TÜBİTAK UME as the Chair of the Metrology Council for a second three-year term. The Director of the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia – Herzegovina (IMBiH), Mr. Zijad Džemıć , will continue his duties as the Deputy Chair.
SMIIC was founded in 2010 as an body of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to encourage cooperation among member states in developing their quality infrastructures with the ultimate aim of removing technical barriers to trade among Islamic countries.
