- To develop and maintain the national measurement standards and systems for the base and derived SI units that are used in Turkey
- To ensure the traceability of Turkish national measurement standards to international measurement standards, to establish the necessary technical and administrative ties to the BIPM and the national metrology institutes of other countries for this purpose and to represent Turkey in a technical capacity before the BIPM,
- To produce, certify and establish an archive of standard reference materials,
- To organize scientific and technical meetings, such as seminars, symposiums, congresses, and conferences, as well as issue publications in its areas of activity and study,
- To conduct research and development activities on industrial measurement problems and measurement techniques, to develop prototypes of measurement devices and systems and to market these nationally and internationally,
- To provide calibration, measurement, consulting and training services to public and private calibration, testing, analysis and measurement laboratories and other establishments that are active in these fields, and to issue the documentation of these services,
- To contribute to the establishment of the national measurement system by providing support to the Turkish Accreditation Agency (TÜRKAK) as part of the effort to build a system for the accreditation of calibration, testing, analysis and measurement laboratories operating in Turkey,
- To make the necessary arrangements to ensure that secondary level laboratories are traceable to internationally recognized national standards in accordance with international norms and to conduct activities within the framework of the international mutual recognition arrangement signed on October 14, 1999 towards this purpose,
- To support formal regional and national agencies responsible for regulatory and enforcement activities pertaining to measurements, to provide assistance towards ensuring that measurements conducted by these agencies are in accordance with the international system, and when necessary, to coordinate measurement activities among them,
- To conduct activities to certify that domestically produced and imported measurement standards are appropriate for metrological utilization, in the framework of the protocol dated 16/12/1994 signed between TÜBİTAK and the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology for the purpose of ensuring that measurements conducted nationwide are compatible with similar measurements conducted within the country and abroad, and that all measurements are traceable,
- To conduct type approvals and similar measurements in the areas determined by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology and other ministries and authorities,
- To train the technical personnel of the institute and to assist in the training of researchers and technical personnel employed in universities, industry and research establishments, and to set up a system of training certification in the area of metrology for this purpose,
- To represent Turkey before IMEKO, GULFMET, EURAMET, EUROCHEM and other international organizations involved in the subject of measurements,
- To establish the national time standard derived from Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) to be applied throughout Turkey, to disseminate the established standard time within Turkey and to participate on behalf of Turkey in the International Atomic Time (TAI),
- To carry out other duties as assigned by the President of TÜBİTAK and the Science Council.
