SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC) 9th Annual Meeting Held in Istanbul

TÜBİTAK UME hosted the 9th Annual Meeting of The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) Metrology Council held in Istanbul on 8-9 October 2021.

The meeting was held in a hybrid (teleconference and physical participation combined) format so that members who could not participate physically due to the COVID-19 pandemic could participate by teleconference. Along with Turkey, a total of 28 representatives from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Iran, Cameroon, Kazakhstan, Libya, Uzbekistan, Senegal and Sudan which are members of the Organization for Cooperation of Islamic Countries (OIC) and SMIIC Metrology Council (SMIIC MC) and Albania attended the meeting physically. A total of 29 representatives from Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Burkina Faso, Indonesia, Morocco, Gambia, Guinea, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Uganda and Jordan participated by teleconference.

At the meeting, the progress report was presented, describing the activities carried out in 2021 within the scope of the SMIIC Metrology Council 2021 - 2023 Work Plan, prepared by the working group involved of representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Cote D’Ivoire, Iran, Cameroon, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Uganda, under the leadership of Turkey. 

In addition, information was presented about the roadmap prepared for relatively less developed or developing SMIIC MC Member States in order to reach the level of developed members. In this regard, support and contributions by Members of the Metrology Council, in particular by TÜBİTAK UME on the way of reaching the goals were emphasized.  

In the meeting, information about the testing and certification of halal products, the production of related reference materials and scientific studies and developments in other metrology fields in the member countries of the SMIIC Metrology Council was also shared. Information was given on the capabilities of TÜBİTAK UME, which has a comprehensive infrastructure in this field, the projects it carries out, joint works that can be done with other member countries and contributions that Turkey can provide to Islamic Countries.
The benefits of the Excellence Metrology Center of Islamic Countries (EMCIC), which is planned to be established under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UME and whose project preparations have been completed, to the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the importance of the realization of this project was emphasized once again during the meeting.

SMIIC, which aims to develop national quality infrastructures in cooperation with the main objective of eliminating incompatibilities in technical issues that hinder trade between Islamic countries, was established in 2010 under the umbrella of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
